Are You Exercising During Your Pregnancy?

Exercising during your pregnancy has numerous benefits, both for you as well as your child.

Many women who maintain a regular exercise routine while pregnant report to feeling less stressed, are less likely to develop diabetes as a result of their pregnancy, and often have an easier labor and delivery.

If your plan is to continue exercising during your pregnancy, we commend you! This article will let you know what you need to do, as well as what you should avoid, to have a healthy exercise routine while pregnant.

In general, you want to start and end your workout with five minutes of gentle stretching. Move slowly, and be gentle to your body. Any time you feel dizzy or lightheaded, stop your routine, and rest. During pregnancy is not the time to push your body to its limits - you want to engage in moderate activity.

A good rule of thumb is that if you can't talk normally, you need to slow down your pace. Many low impact forms of exercise are safe during pregnancy, although you need to first consult your doctor to make sure a particular form of exercise is safe for you.

Swimming and brisk walking generally carry very little risk to you or your child, and other activities like low impact aerobics or elliptical workouts also tend to be safe and beneficial. If you were a frequent jogger before your pregnancy, slow jogging may also be an option for you.

As your balance and coordination become impaired during your third trimester, you'll probably want to abstain from exercises that require a good deal of balance and/or coordination skills.

While pregnant, you want to absolutely avoid any contact sports or any form of exercise in which falling is likely. Consult your doctor to make sure your exercise routine will be safe for you and your baby.

Women who have a history of miscarriage or who are bleeding or spotting during their pregnancy, for example, should not exercise during pregnancy. Your doctor can help you devise an exercise routine that is right for you and your own unique situation.

Many women report that maintaining a regular exercise routine during their pregnancy helps them to feel more energized and helps with their labor and delivery. After consulting with your doctor, embark on your own exercise plan during your pregnancy; we think you'll be pleased with the results! And your baby will thank you.
