Top Five Ways to Get Fit

By Marc

Getting in shape takes time, effort, and perseverance. This article will help you get the body you've always wanted.

When getting fit, it's important to be consistent. Set aside several times each week to exercise. Treat your exercise times the way you'd treat an appointment or social obligation. Unless an emergency comes up, you need to be there!

To stay on track, it's important to vary your routine. Working different parts of your body in different ways will develop your overall fitness, help you avoid injury, and keep you motivated. It's important to work your whole body because studies have shown that it's not possible to target certain areas of your body.

For example, no matter how many sit ups you do, you won't see results unless you're walking, running, or doing other cardio exercises and strength training workouts to burn fat. Alternating your routine will help you avoid overworking. Running every single day may seem like a good goal, but you're more likely to injure yourself than if you run on Monday and lift free weights on Tuesday. This will also add some variety so you don't get bored.

Exercise with a friend or partner if you can, and this will help encourage you in many ways. You'll both want each other to succeed, and you'll be more likely to keep going and keep meeting so you don't let your friend or partner down. If you've always found exercise boring, your exercise buddy will give you someone to talk to. Choose a friend you don't get to see very often; your exercise time will be a chance to catch up!

Set small goals to stay motivated. Getting fit can seem daunting because we often think of the big picture. Even if you're trying to lose weight, try to set goals based on your activity. It's natural to plateau. If your goal is to walk a certain distance or for a certain amount of time, that's a goal that's completely in your control! Sign up for a 5k, 10k, or marathon to give yourself something to work for. Often these events have training teams to keep you going, and you'll be proud of yourself for completing such an event.

If you start to feel discouraged or aren't sure how to get started, talk to a personal trainer or other fitness professional. They'll know what it takes to get in shape and many exercise instructors are familiar with what it's like not to feel motivated.

Ask questions not just about technique, but about what motivated them to become a fitness professional. Even just having a sympathetic ear can be a big help.

Getting fit takes effort, but it's not impossible. Follow the advice in this article and soon you'll be looking good, getting in shape, and feeling great!
